Wow. In my entire life of watching soccer I have never quite seen something like that. The United States defeated Japan 5-2 in an absolute thriller of a match to win the 2015 Womens World Cup.
The U.S. scored 4 goals in the opening 16 minutes!! USWNT captain Carli Lloyd scored 2 goals in the opening five minutes of the match, both off of set pieces. Then in the 14th minute, Lauren Holiday hit a volley into the back of the net. And in the 16th minute, Carli Lloyd completed her hat trick on a strike from midfield that found it’s way over the Japanese goalkeeper. That was the craziest beginning to a game I’ve ever seen.
The match did settle down after that wild start though. Japan started finding more of the ball and in the 27th minute Yuki Ogimi scored a nice left footed shot. Taking a 4-1 lead into halftime of a World Cup Final is certainly a luxury but a Julie Johnston own goal in the 52nd minute gave Japan a lifeline at 4-2. That lifeline only lasted a few minutes as Tobin Heath found the 5th goal for the U.S. and put the game to bed.
The U.S. Women started the tournament off slowly but started clicking on all cylinders when it mattered, in the knockout rounds. Their performances against Germany and Japan were both fantastic and made the USWNT deserved World Cup Champions! After playing very mediocre in the group stage, Carli Lloyd really stepped up her game to win the Golden Ball (the tournament’s best player) and help lead the U.S. to a World Cup Title. This match will definitely go down in history as one of the best ever! The USA has now won a record 3 World Cups!
